On Arrival

You arrive at an apartment and are greeted by the patient, a 30-year-old male. He is sitting at the kitchen table, holding a tea towel wrapped around his left hand. There are some blood spots on the tea towel and the table. He appears calm but slightly concerned about the cut.

Events Preceding / Injury Details:
  • Mechanism: Was chopping vegetables (carrots) for dinner ~20 minutes ago when the kitchen knife slipped, cutting the palm of his left hand near the base of the thumb.
  • Wound Description (Patient): States it bled quite a bit initially but seems to have slowed since applying pressure with the tea towel. Describes the cut as "not too deep".
  • Associated Symptoms: Complains of moderate pain at the site. Denies numbness, tingling, or weakness in fingers. Denies any other injuries.
  • First Aid: Ran hand under tap briefly then applied pressure with tea towel.
  • Alcohol/Drugs: Denies alcohol or drug use.
